HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)

The primary protocol used on the World Wide Web to provide communications between clients and servers. Much of the information transported by HTTP consists of web pages and related data. Note that HTTP is stateless, meaning that each transaction is self-contained and that there is no built-in mechanism to connect a server to a particular client. To get around this limitation, many servers issue cookies to clients to allow the server to keep track of the status of different clients.
